Eating for two can be a challenge, especially when you are experiencing morning sickness during pregnancy. Most women feel its symptoms when they reach their 6th week. Nausea and vomiting is common in the first trimester, but will start to subside during the 12th week of pregnancy. Nevertheless, it is important to eat well while you are pregnant. Carrying a baby requires you to eat more nutritious food. It is important to eat well-balanced meals, in order to supply your baby with essential nutrients.

Avoid dieting when you are pregnant, as this can put you and your child at risk. Dieting isnt necessary as long as you make smarter choices when eating. Avoid eating sweets if you want to maintain a healthy weight. Sugary desserts and chocolates are high in calories but low in nutrients. Ask your doctor for tips on how to keep your weight down without dieting. Taking dietary supplements is not advised unless advised by your doctor.

Although most types of food are safe to eat during pregnancy, there are certain items that you need to stay away from. Raw eggs and meat should be avoided. A few recipes of homemade salad dressings and mayonnaise require raw eggs, which can put you at risk of salmonella poisoning. Opt for commercially processed salad dressings and mayonnaise instead. These are made with pasteurized eggs, and wont cause food poisoning.

Coliform bacteria and salmonella are present in raw and undercooked meat. Therefore, raw seafood and beef should be avoided when you are pregnant. Cook seafood and beef thoroughly before serving. Shellfish should be avoided, especially if theres a red tide advisory. Well-cooked shellfish can still be contaminated with algae-borne infection, which can be fatal when passed on to our body.

Listeria is a type of bacteria that is present in unpasteurized milk. It is also found in some types of soft cheeses. Refrain from eating brie, feta, gorgonzola, Roquefort and camembert cheeses while you are pregnant. Mexican cheeses, like queso blanco and queso fresco should be avoided as well. Choose pasteurized milk when buying from the grocery store. Listeria infection can be dangerous, especially when it enters the placenta and causes blood poisoning. It can cause fetal infection and even death.

Watch out for health advisories on unsafe fishing areas. Lakes and rivers that are located near industrial areas are unsafe for fishing. Fish that are caught in industrial areas may be tainted with high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls. Refrain from eating striped bass, bluefish, salmon, pike and trout while you are pregnant. These freshwater fish are possible carriers of toxic substances from industrial pollutants. When in doubt, call the Environment Protection Agency or your local health department.

Alcohol and tobacco smoke should be avoided, especially when you are expecting a baby. Alcohol consumption has been shown to cause FAS in infants. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) affects babies who have been exposed to alcohol in their mothers womb. They usually have a lower birth weight and abnormal physical features. Mild mental retardation and hydrocephalus are also common in babies whose mothers have consumed alcohol during pregnancy.
